Thermal hysteresis of the dielectric susceptibility of solid oxygen in the audio frequency range

چکیده
High sensitivity measurements of the dielectric constant of solid oxygen are reported for 4 T 54 K. The results show unexpectedly large hysteresis effects for the temperature dependence of the dielectric constant in the and phases of oxygen on thermal cycling below 44 K. The behavior is compared to that observed for solid N2-Ar mixtures where the geometrical frustration of the molecular orientational ordering leads to pronounced memory effects. In contrast to solid N2-Ar where the effects of frustration and disorder combine to form an orientational glass, there is no disorder present for pure O2 and the hystereses are attributed to the strong frustration of the interactions.

Generalized Fluctuation Dissipation and Thermal Hysteresis of Dielectric Susceptibility in Frustrated Molecular Orientational Glasses
The results of high precision measurements of the dielectric susceptibility ε(T ) of solid oxygen in the low temperature α and β phases that have highly frustrated orientational interactions, are compared with the results of earlier studies of the thermal behavior of ε(T ) in solid N2-Ar mixtures. In the latter case the combination of disorder and frustration results in orientational glass stat...

High sensitivity dielectric measurements are reported for N2-Ar solid mixtures for 49,x(N2) ,100 mol%. The results show the onset of strong hysteresis effects for the temperature dependence of the dielectric constant on thermal cycling below 30 K. These onset temperatures are identified with transitions to a quadrupolar glass state. Samples cooled from high temperatures ~above 50 K! in the pres...

High-sensitivity dielectric constant measurements of solid N 2 in the audio frequency range have revealed the existence of strong unexpected hysteresis in the high-temperature HCP phase above an onset temperature 1 ) "42 K. We report a sharp kink at 1 ) , observed only when the sample is annealed at 41.5(1(43 K for 6}8 h, suggesting that the thermal processes in this window of temperature are r...

Audio frequency dielectric constant measurements of CO and N in their solid phases are presented. Anomalous 2 temperature dependence of the dielectric constant in the a-phases of both CO and N and strong hysteresis effects above an 2 onset temperature T ,42 K in the b-phase of pure N have been observed. A simple mean-field theory is proposed which h 2 explains some of the observed anomalies in ...

Several silicate materials were plasma sprayed and characterized by the authors in recent years from the point of view of their chemical and phase compositions, microstructure and mechanical as well as thermal properties. Present work is concerned with selected dielectric properties of these deposits. Synthetic mullite and steatite as well as natural olivine-forsterite were plasma sprayed using...
